  24. Ok what's the catch? $19 mowing? My son wants $25, how can you mow for $19?

We use a relatively new technique (word was coined in 2006) called "crowdsourcing".

Wikipedia describes it as "the act of taking tasks traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group of people or community, through an "open call" to a large group of people (a crowd) ...". That's exactly what we do. When a order is placed it's automatically sent to the mowers we have that want to mow within that zip code. Whoever is closest and available accepts the order, mows the lawn, submits photographs as proof that the job was done satisfactorily and is then paid immediately over the internet.

Obviously this is less expensive to operate then the traditional lawn care business who has a local business location, a fleet of trucks and equipment, and operators who answer calls and create daily routes. While the traditional mower working for a business may receive $8 to $10 an hour, our mowers receive nearly 90% of each order, with the remaining 10% going towards credit card processing fees and maintaining the website. This makes LawnMowingOnline very desirable to anyone who wishes to make a living from mowing lawns, and the more mowers we have the more areas we can offer services.

  25. I do not want to be disturbed, please tell your mower not to knock on the door

We never knock on the door. That is part of our policy, the idea that you can click a few buttons online and have your lawn mowed without ever having to even meet the lawn mower.

  26. I wanted my lawn done on a particular date but it ended up raining all day, what do you do?

We will mow the next day, weather permitting. If it continues to rain we will mow the next dry day.

  27. I had my lawn scheduled to be mowed on a particular date but it wasn't mowed, what happened?

It was probably forecast to rain. We subscribe to Accuweather.com. If Accuweather.com predicts rain in your area on the date scheduled we can not guarantee the mower will mow that day. If they do not mow the contractor should send you a message and will mow the next day that rain is not forecast. If the lawn was not mowed and the reason was not weather related you will be given a full refund.

  28. I don't feel comfortable giving out my credit card, is my credit card safe on your website?

Your payments are handled by Paypal.com, by far the easiest and safest way to purchase something over the internet. Paypal is owned by eBay, and all eBay auction transactions are handled by Paypal, over 1 million transactions a day. When you click the "Checkout with Paypal" button on the checkout screen the information you have entered is sent to Paypal and you are sent to Paypal to finalize the payment. Your credit card information is never shared with us, only the lawn mowing information entered on our website.

This is similar to shopping at a store. The cashier scans and totals up your purchase. You then swipe your card and sign your name. The cashier never sees your card.

  29. I love your lawn care service! Do you offer any other services?

Although we are actively pursuing other business ventures we do not have any that are ready for public usage, however we are always looking for new ideas. If you have any suggestions please send them to us through the Contact Us page.

  30. I would rather order over the phone, can I call you and place a order?

At this time, no. All orders must be placed online.

  31. Can I pay cash? Can I pay the mower when he arrives?

Unfortunately no. All orders must be placed online, but if you are very happy with the quality of his/her work you may give the mower a tip.

  32. Does your standard service include clean up? Do you clear all the concrete surfaces with a blower?

The contractors do clean up afterwards, they have to submit photos of the lawn they mowed before they are paid and no one wants to take a photo of a grass covered driveway and submit it for payment. Since these are contractors the equipment varies, most have blowers or other devices to clear grass off the sidewalk and driveway.

  33. I'm considering ordering your service for the rest of the year, is there an easy way to schedule that or do I need to go through and put in a request for each and every service date?

We're were working on a way to do recurring payments. In the meantime the order form does allow selection of a date for mowing, our regulars have just been choosing several future dates.

  34. It's nearly 1pm and so far, nobody has shown up to mow. How late do the workers mow, on a typical day?

    Dawn to Dusk.

  35. What if I only want the front yard mowed? It's very small.

The smallest mowing option is 0 sq ft through 10,890 sq ft, so you would be charged for that option.

  36. I have a dog, can you knock on my door before you mow so I may bring him inside?

Yes. When you place a order in the "Message to the Mower" area write that you would like the mower to knock before mowing.

  37. My backyard has a locked gate, how do I give you the combination or key?

When you place a order put a check in the box next to "Message to the Mower" and put in the textbox the combination or where the key will be hidden. A good place to hide a key is the mailbox.

  38. Do you bag the grass or mulch?

We only offer mulching services, we do not bag.

  39. I live in Arizona and noticed that you do not have the option of bagging the grass. In AZ that might be an option that you want to add, have it be a $5 add on or whatever. I think you would get more people at least in AZ to sign up for your service if they can add this as an option.

We've considered it but there are a few problems with offering bagging. First, the system is setup that anyone with a mower and weed eater could mow lawns, you don't need a truck, trailer and professional riding mower if you only want to mow local 1/4 acre lots. If we offer bagging then at least a trailer would be required which may prevent some mowers from accepting those jobs.

Not only that but bagging 1 acre is far more work and time consuming than bagging 1/4 acre so we'd have to charge more depending on the size of the lot.

Then there's the issues with disposal of the grass clippings. In many areas it is illegal to throw away grass clippings, so mowers would need to know where to dispose of the grass in their area. These locations could be far away, requiring further time and money, and be expensive. For example, the closest yard waste disposal facility to our St. Louis location is 60 miles away and charges $1 per 30 gallon bag.

In addition some cities have even stepped in and strongly discouraged bagging grass clippings: http://www.fortworthgov.org/dem/info/default.aspx?id=4976

So as you can see offering bagging isn't really a viable option.

  40. Do you offer edging? What is edging?

By definition, "edging" is using a gardening tool like a edger and driving it deep into the lawn and turf to define a clear separation between the lawn and a walkway or other paved surface.

Since true edging requires additional tools and is very time consuming we can not offer this service at this time because it would be too expensive. Instead the "edging" we offer is using the weed trimmer to trim the grass around the sidewalk and driveway very closely.

  41. I would like to talk to someone over the phone or have the contractor call me before arriving

We currently do not accept phone calls for several reasons. Main reason is because paying people to answer phones at all times is expensive (about $1,000 a week) and would require us to raise prices. Also the person answering would not be the contractor mowing so they could not provide order details, they could only discuss content already available on the website. When we had a number in the past, customers would call and try to place orders which is not something we offer yet. And some people claimed they were told different information by phone then what is available on the website. However this is a popular request so it will be added at some point, just need to find a way for it to make financial sense.

The contractor can not call before arriving for similar reasons. When customers spoke to contractors in the past some customers claimed they were told different information by the contractor then what is available on the website. A few customers even said they did not want to pay after the mowing was completed because they claimed the contractor did not call before arriving.

So to prevent any miscommunication we do not accept phone calls at this time. If you have special mowing instructions those instructions can be put on the order. Also we have a internal messaging system between customers and contractors so you can contact the contractor after the order is placed by logging in and simply clicking "Send Message" next to the order. The contractor can then respond the same way and by sending messages everyone has the same written information.

  42. I live in a brand new subdivision that does not appear on any map, can I give you driving directions?

Unfortunately no. If the address does not appear on Google Maps then we can not mow the property. This includes empty lots that do not have an address associated with it.

  43. I ordered awhile ago and was not satisfied with the service, can I still receive a full refund?

Yes!  Customers must approve and release payment on every order before the contractor is paid, so if you have not approved of the order you may Dispute the order to receive a refund.  Just login and click on the order and click the Dispute button.  If you have already released payment to the contractor then it is not possible to refund anymore.

  44. Do you hand pull weeds?

    No

  45. What is weed trimming?

Weed trimming is using a gas powered device with either a plastic string or blades attached to a rotating head at the end of a long shaft to cut weeds and long grass that are too close to objects for a mower to reach. The device is sometimes called a "weed eater", "weed-whacker" or string trimmer.
