  1. Ok what's the catch? $19 mowing? My son wants $25, how can you mow for $19?

We use a relatively new technique (word was coined in 2006) called "crowdsourcing".

Wikipedia describes it as "the act of taking tasks traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing them to a group of people or community, through an "open call" to a large group of people (a crowd) ...". That's exactly what we do. When a order is placed it's automatically sent to the mowers we have that want to mow within that zip code. Whoever is closest and available accepts the order, mows the lawn, submits photographs as proof that the job was done satisfactorily and is then paid immediately over the internet.

Obviously this is less expensive to operate then the traditional lawn care business who has a local business location, a fleet of trucks and equipment, and operators who answer calls and create daily routes. While the traditional mower working for a business may receive $8 to $10 an hour, our mowers receive nearly 90% of each order, with the remaining 10% going towards credit card processing fees and maintaining the website. This makes LawnMowingOnline very desirable to anyone who wishes to make a living from mowing lawns, and the more mowers we have the more areas we can offer services.

  2. I do not want to be disturbed, please tell your mower not to knock on the door

We never knock on the door. That is part of our policy, the idea that you can click a few buttons online and have your lawn mowed without ever having to even meet the lawn mower.

  3. I wanted my lawn done on a particular date but it ended up raining all day, what do you do?

We will mow the next day, weather permitting. If it continues to rain we will mow the next dry day.

  4. I had my lawn scheduled to be mowed on a particular date but it wasn't mowed, what happened?

It was probably forecast to rain. We subscribe to Accuweather.com. If Accuweather.com predicts rain in your area on the date scheduled we can not guarantee the mower will mow that day. If they do not mow the contractor should send you a message and will mow the next day that rain is not forecast.  If you have any other questions, login and send them to the contractor.

  5. I don't feel comfortable giving out my credit card, is my credit card safe on your website?

Your payments are handled by Paypal.com, by far the easiest and safest way to purchase something over the internet. Paypal is owned by eBay, and all eBay auction transactions are handled by Paypal, over 1 million transactions a day. When you click the "Checkout with Paypal" button on the checkout screen the information you have entered is sent to Paypal and you are sent to Paypal to finalize the payment. Your credit card information is never shared with us, only the lawn mowing information entered on our website.

This is similar to shopping at a store. The cashier scans and totals up your purchase. You then swipe your card and sign your name. The cashier never sees your card.

  6. I love your lawn care service! Do you offer any other services?

YES!  We now allow bidding.  You can ask for any additional services in the "Message to the Contractor" area.  Contractors will submit bids.  If you have questions, you can post them to the contractor before accepting their bid or even ask them for a lower bid amount.  If you're not happy with the bids you can always cancel the bid and receive a credit to your account.

  7. I would rather order over the phone, can I call you and place a order?

At this time, no. All orders must be placed online.

  8. Can I pay cash? Can I pay the mower when he arrives?

Unfortunately no. All orders must be placed online, but if you are very happy with the quality of his/her work you may give the mower a tip.

  9. Does your standard service include clean up? Do you clear all the concrete surfaces with a blower?

The contractors do clean up afterwards, they have to submit photos of the lawn they mowed before they are paid and no one wants to take a photo of a grass covered driveway and submit it for payment. Since these are contractors the equipment varies, most have blowers or other devices to clear grass off the sidewalk and driveway.

  10. I'm considering ordering your service for the rest of the year, is there an easy way to schedule that or do I need to go through and put in a request for each and every service date?

We're were working on a way to do reoccurring payments. In the meantime the order form does allow selection of a date for mowing, our regulars have just been choosing several future dates.

  11. It's nearly 1pm and so far, nobody has shown up to mow. How late do the workers mow, on a typical day?

    Dawn to Dusk.

  12. What if I only want the front yard mowed? It's very small.

The smallest mowing option is 0 sq ft through 10,890 sq ft, so you would be charged for that option.

  13. I have a dog, can you knock on my door before you mow so I may bring him inside?

Yes. When you place a order put a check in the box next to "Message to the Mower" and put in the textbox that you would like the mower to knock before mowing.

  14. My backyard has a locked gate, how do I give you the combination or key?

When you place a order put a check in the box next to "Message to the Mower" and put in the textbox that the contractor needs to send a message to you through the website to get the combination or where the key will be hidden. That way only the contractor that takes the job will be told the combination or where the key is hidden.

  15. Do you bag the grass or mulch?

By default we offer mulching only, but since orders that are not taken go to bid, you can now ask for grass bagging or any other additional service you want.  Simply place a order and put in the "Message to the Contractor" all the services you want.  Once it converts to a bid, the contractors will bid on it.  If you have questions, you can post them to the contractor before accepting their bid or even ask them for a lower bid amount.  If you're not happy with the bids you can always cancel the bid and receive a credit to your account.

  17. Do you offer edging? What is edging?

By definition, "edging" is using a gardening tool like a edger and driving it deep into the lawn and turf to define a clear separation between the lawn and a walkway or other paved surface.

Since true edging requires additional tools and is very time consuming we can not offer this service at this time because it would be too expensive. Instead the "edging" we offer is using the weed trimmer to trim the grass around the sidewalk and driveway very closely.

  18. I would like to talk to someone over the phone or have the contractor call me before arriving

We currently do not accept phone calls for several reasons. Main reason is because paying people to answer phones at all times is expensive (about $1,000 a week) and would require us to raise prices. Also the person answering would not be the contractor mowing so they could not provide order details, they could only discuss content already available on the website. When we had a number in the past, customers would call and try to place orders which is not something we offer yet. And some people claimed they were told different information by phone then what is available on the website. However this is a popular request so it will be added at some point, just need to find a way for it to make financial sense.

The contractor can not call before arriving for similar reasons. When customers spoke to contractors in the past some customers claimed they were told different information by the contractor then what is available on the website. A few customers even said they did not want to pay after the mowing was completed because they claimed the contractor did not call before arriving.

So to prevent any miscommunication we do not accept phone calls at this time. If you have special mowing instructions those instructions can be put on the order. Also we have a internal messaging system between customers and contractors so you can contact the contractor after the order is placed by logging in and simply clicking "Send Message" next to the order. The contractor can then respond the same way and by sending messages everyone has the same written information.

  19. I live in a brand new subdivision that does not appear on any map, can I give you driving directions?

Yes.  Since orders that are not taken go to bid, you can now request properties that do not appear on maps to be mowed or vacant lots be mowed.

  20. I ordered awhile ago and was not satisfied with the service, can I still receive a full refund?

Customers must approve of every order before the contractor is paid, so this question no longer applies since the customer must have approved of the service provided before the contractor could get paid.  We can not offer a refund if the customer approved of the service provided and later changed their mind.

  21. Do you hand pull weeds?

Yes and no.  It's not a standard service we offer, but since orders that are not taken go to bid, you can now ask for weeds pulled by hand from flower gardens or any other additional service you want.

  22. What is weed trimming?

Weed trimming is using a gas powered device with either a plastic string or blades attached to a rotating head at the end of a long shaft to cut weeds and long grass that are too close to objects for a mower to reach. The device is sometimes called a "weed eater", "weed-whacker" or string trimmer.

  23. Can I request only one particular contractor by name to take the order?

YES!  If you liked a particular contractor, open the order they did for you and click on their username.  You'll be brought to their profile page.  Click the HIRE ME button to hire that contractor again!  You'll be asked to fill out a bidding form which will be sent to the contractor to bid on.  The contractor will submit a bid.  If you have questions, you can post them to the contractor before accepting their bid or even ask them for a lower bid amount.  If the contractor you want does not reply to your bid request then other contractors can also bid on the project.  If you're not happy with the bids you can always cancel the bid and receive a credit to your account.

  24. I placed a order and quickly canceled and was charged a $15 fee, what was the fee for?

Cancellation fees are very common in service industry type businesses. Doctors, dentists, hair salons, moving companies and many other businesses charge fees if a appointment is canceled within a certain time frame of when the service is being provided. So we adopted the same polices that those businesses do. If a person schedules services and cancels within 2 business days of the order being placed LawnMowingOnline reserves the right to charge a $15 fee. The policy has worked exactly as expected, more orders are getting accepted and mowed and fewer orders are being cancelled. Avoiding this fee is simple, just do not cancel within 2 business days of scheduling service. For example, if you order May 1st for mowing on May 2nd, do not cancel on May 1st, May 2nd (1 day) or May 3rd (2 days). The order can be cancelled on May 4th (3 days since May 1st) and there will be no fee. Of course by then the order will likely be accepted by a contractor and already mowed so there would no longer be any reason to cancel.

To make sure every customer knows about the cancellation fee it is listed in 2 places. It is listed on the Terms of Service page that all customers agree to before placing an order and the cancellation fee is explained in bold text and underlined on the cancellation page that all customers must fill out to cancel an order.

  25. I mowed a lawn and it says "Awaiting Review". What does that mean and when do I get paid?

"Awaiting Review" means the contractor is waiting on the customer to login and approve of the work. When the contractor finished and uploaded photos, the customer was sent a email and a text message saying to login and approve of the work. After the customer approves the contractor would go to MY ACCOUNT and request payment. Most customers login and approve immediately, which allows the contractor to login and request payment immediately. Payments are sent daily, so if a contractor finishes and uploads photos, the customer approves, and the contractor requests payment, the contractor can be paid the same day they provided service. If for some reason the customer does not approve of the work within a reasonable time frame the contractor can send messages to the customer requesting they approve but be careful, too many messages might upset a customer and they could leave negative feedback so be polite.

  26. Do you guys look at disputes, or do they just automatically go to unresolved after 3 days?

Contractors are responsible for satisfying their customers, so when a customer opens a dispute the contractor needs to talk with the customer and resolve. Disputes can only be open by the customer, and if customer does not cancel the dispute in 3 days then they are given a full refund and the contractor is given a negative review. There is nothing for support to review since contractor works for customer, not LawnMowingOnline, so we can not deny any dispute a customer opens.  So if you have a dispute you believe you have resolved, please remember to ask the customer to close the dispute after you have resolved it, otherwish the customer will be refunded and the contractor will not be paid.
